Music at St Mary's

Music List

August-26

September-26

October-26

St Mary's has traditionally a much-valued choral tradition and we are formulating plans to revive/restart this. Currently we have a professional soloist supporting our morning services, and she is supported by some extra singers for our twice a month Evensong.

Our Sung Eucharist still has an anthem during the communion with other pieces included in the relevant points of the liturgy. At Evensong the Psalm, Canticles and Anthem are sung by our singers at each service.  In Advent and Christmas, we have special services at which friends come to help sing and lead at services to celebrate the start of Advent with our Advent Carol service and the Festival of Nine lessons and Carols which takes place nearer Christmas. Special services are also done for Rogationtide, Civic Occasions and other occasions.

We are always happy to welcome new members to join us. We sing each week at both the morning and evening services and we generally ask members to commit to one of the services each week, although if you want to sing at both services, you will not be turned away! We currently run a full practice before our Evensong’s at 5.30pm. We recommend that you come and have a chat with the Director of Music  or any of our singers after Evensong over a cup of tea (Coffee is also provided as are biscuits!).

Joining the Choir of St Michael’s Church

Phillip Sangwine is the Director of Music at St Mary’s. He has previously held posts in York at the churches of St Helens and All Saints Pavement; he has also been an Assistant Director of Music at St Mary’s Beverley. All three churches still have flourishing choral traditions covering the whole range of the Anglican Choral tradition within a parish church context. Phillip has his MA Music in Sacred Music Studies having complied this with Bangor University under the tutelage of Professor John Harper (Previously the Director General of the RSCM), Phillip also holds diplomas from the Royal College of Organists, Royal School of Church Music and Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Phillip also runs his own private music teaching practice where he teaches, piano, organ and music theory, he is joined in this by his lovely wife Renate who teaches singing and piano.

Sadly, the church organ is no longer in operation needing significant repair. We are fortunate to have an organ on loan, which is as follows:
